The Best Dyng Swan is... According to Mexile's readers, the best Dyng Swan (among six dancers)...is:

THIRD PLACE WITH 26% OF THE VOTES

NATALIA MAKAROVA

OPINIONS:

- Arms folded, on tiptoe, she dreamily and slowly circles the stage. By even, gliding motions of the hands, returning to the background from whence she emerged, she seems to strive toward the horizon, as though a moment more and she will fly, exploring the confines of space with her soul... by one swift forward-gliding morion of the right foot to earth, she sinks on the left knee, the aerial creature struggling against earthly bonds; and there, transfixed by pain, she dies.

- The way she carries herself is just above and beyond. Even her simplest gestures are extremely elegant. For me, she's really a complete artist.

SECONDD PLACE WITH 28% OF THE VOTES

MAYA PLISETSKAYA

OPINIONS:

- With this performance Maya Plisetskaya has given to Dance the most beautiful and tragic gift. She has made it unsurpassable. She remains the greatest dancer of all times.

- What i think is most amazing about the dying swan is the dancer as to give the impression of weakening and dying without actually giving away on her feet or in her body... this dance involves immense strength alone, but the dancer has to act like she giving up/ dying... it's multitasking beyond belief!!! i find it utterly incredible!

FIRST PLACE WITH 30% OF THE VOTES

ANA PAVLOVA

OPINIONS:

- This is the most emotional interpretation of the dying swan I have ever seen. Many dancers after Anna Pavlova added fluidity and beauty to this dance. Anna's swan is actually a dying swan. Her dancing is gorgeous but there is some awkwardness in the movements because she is fighting back the grips of death, which is never pretty or perfect. Anna was never afraid to expose her heart on the stage. It seems like she is not dancing, she is actually living it emotionally. Brilliant!

- its amazing that despite the age of this video, & it being black & white, you can still manage to see the serene look in her eyes...like she is truly gearing up for her death. Her movements are so jerky, & exaggerated...perfectly imperfect. Like it is almost effortless. She is light years beyond any other "swans". In a class all her own.
